What Are The Education Requirements For Getting Into Fashion Marketing

Good grades in high school will help in finding success in the fashion industry.

Fashion is a highly competitive industry, and therefore the education requirements and standards for fashion school applicants is very high. Fashion schools require minimum test scores, assessments, GPA's, portfolios and more. In order to increase your chances for being accepted, work hard while in high school and save projects that have received a positive response from your teachers.

High School Diploma

A high school diploma (or GED) is a requirement in order to apply to a fashion school. Some fashion schools do not allow high school students to apply directly to a bachelor's degree program; after successfully completing the associate's degree program, student's are able to move on to the bachelor's program. This allows student's to develop academically and gain basic skills before moving into a specialized program.

Grades

Due to the competitive nature of the fashion Industry, minimum SAT/ACT scores and a high GPA are usually required. Most schools require a minimum SAT score of 1,000 to 1,200 and a minimum GPA of 3.0. SAT/ACT and GPA requirements are not set in stone, but higher scores increase the probability of being accepted.

Portfolio

Most fashion schools are very competitive, so in order to select one student over another, a portfolio is required. For example, in the 2009-2010 school year at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, 4,000 students applied, but only 1,000 were accepted. A portfolio contains previous work that showcases your creativity, experience, skills and abilities. A portfolio can either make or break your application for fashion school, so be sure to put in as much effort as possible while creating it.

Assessment of Skills

In the fashion industry, sometimes having the minimum required grades and a great portfolio isn't enough. Often, schools will give undergraduate applicants a skills assessment to test a potential student's ability to successfully complete coursework. An assessment can test math, writing and critical thinking abilities and also allow the school to place a student into the appropriate level class
