Be A Good Vacuum Salesman

Selling merchandise can be a tough job, especially when people are determined not to buy your product. There are many different factors you will have to take into consideration if you expect to be a successful vacuum-cleaner salesperson. You cannot just go to a person's house and expect her to buy your product instantaneously.

1. Understand that selling vacuum cleaners is not an easy task, especially if you are a door-to-door salesperson. If you work in a store, it's a little easier, because people usually come to you. Either way, you need to know the product you are selling. Door-to-door salespeople usually only sell one brand of vacuum, whereas store associates sell many different kinds. Regardless, acquaint yourself with the brand(s) and its functions and capabilities. Read every manual that is available on your product, so you know exactly what the vacuum can do and what it can't. You may have to take some training classes that were offered through your company. These types of classes will give you all the knowledge you need about your product and teach you present yourself to clients.


2. Recognize that door-to-door salesmen often have to find ways to get clients to open their doors so the salesman can demonstrate their product. Cold calling to set up appointments is one way to do it; however, be forewarned that many people do not like telemarketers. Once you have some appointments set, make sure you portray a clean, neat appearance. Men should wear nice slacks, shoes and a good shirt; women should sport nice slacks, shoes and a blouse. People will not want to let you in if you appear dirty or disheveled.


3. Be pleasant and courteous when you are in someone's home. Respect that home. Start by talking to the homeowner about her needs in a vacuum cleaner. Does she need a steam cleaner? Does she need a vacuum that will pick up large messes or small? Does she need a tool to reach those hard-to-get-at places? Find out what the potential customer is looking for and proceed accordingly.


4. Demonstrate what your vacuum cleaner can do. Paying special attention to what the potential buyer just told you about his needs, show him how your product works. If he needs something for hard-to-reach places, use the tool on your vacuum that is designed for those types of situations. You want to demonstrate exactly how excellent your product is, and why it is superior to anything else on the market. Make comparisons, such as "Product A is better than Product B because it has a swivel head"; or "It has more power than any other vacuum like it." Believe in your product and sell it.


5. When you have completed your presentation, if the person does not buy your product, give her your business card and thank her for her time. Ask her to let her friends and family know about your services, and encourage her to call you if she feels she might be interested in your product later on down the road. Be respectful, even if you do not make the sale.
