Salary Levels In Advertising

Every business needs to advertise.


The advertising industry encompasses a wide number of job descriptions and skill levels, and a wide range of compensation as well. The field of advertising includes everyone from the copywriter working on ad copy to the advertising managers and directors who plan and implement multimillion dollar marketing campaigns. Each of these jobs is important in its own way, and the salary levels for those jobs are set by market forces and competition between individual companies in the industry.


Advertising and Promotions Directors


Advertising and promotions directors plan and coordinate advertising polices for the companies they work for. This planning can run the gamut from developing ad campaigns to planning special events. Advertising and promotions directors also help to create the giveaways and freebies companies provide at trade shows, remote broadcasts and other events. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly wage for an advertising and promotions director is $40.33. This equates to an average annual full-time wage of $83,890.


Advertising Sales Agents


Advertising sales agents call on local, regional and national businesses and attempt to sell advertising on behalf of their clients. These sales agents work in a variety of different industries, both in print media, radio, television and online. The salary for these jobs varies widely, from a low of $10.95 per hour to a high of $46.18. But as of May 2010, the median wage for an advertising sales agent was $21.80 per hour, which equates to an annual full-time salary of $45,350.


Sales Managers


Sales managers provide guidance to the advertising sales agents within the organization. The sales manager is responsible for developing and maintaining the territories for the salespeople to work. Another part of the sales manager's job is to develop quotes for the various products and services the company sells. Sales managers also develop the marketing materials the front-line salespeople use when they call on businesses throughout their territories. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, the median hourly wage for a sales manager is $47.37. That equates to an annual wage of $98,530.


Public Relations Managers


Public relations managers are responsible for maintaining and protecting the positive image of a company or an entity. The individuals in these positions employ a number of tactics to create a favorable impression of the companies they work for, including advertising and promotions, community outreach and social media exposure. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average hourly wage for a public relations director is $44.14. That is the equivalent of a $91,810 annual full-time salary.
