Telemarketer use effective communication skills to accomplish their objectives.
Telemarketing for your business or service can be a difficult undertaking, but if done correctly, telemarketing can have a tremendous payout in the long run. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that over 300,000 people in the United States worked as telemarketers as of May 2008. Although typically the person who receives the call views the telemarketer unfavorably, successful telemarketers break through this barrier by utilizing various techniques that pique the potential customer's curiosity and lead to the sale.
Sticking to Your Script
One business consulting group, SCORE, notes the need for a script in telemarketing efforts. SCORE suggests hiring a professional or working with a professional to write your own script. The script needs to be clear and concise, leading the phone conservation quickly to the objective of the call. Your intention should be clear to the person who picks up the phone. If you are selling a product, the script should let the listener know that you are soliciting his business, but it should also let him know how he might potentially benefit from your product or service so that he will want to ask questions about it.
Evaluation
Another important factor in an effective telemarketing campaign is the evaluation of your current efforts. Once you have a clearly established program or script, evaluate your successes and failures. Look specifically at telemarketers who are successful to see what they are doing correctly and look at those who are not to discover where they are deficient. Typically clear and effective communication skills define the difference between success and failure as a telemarketer. Determine whether your marketers are using their script and whether they counter objections effectively. Instructing them to remain calm and noncombative when met with resistance can also be helpful.
Tracking Your Efforts
Whether you are a telemarketer or a business owner who utilizes telemarketers to get your sales pitch out to the public, tracking your efforts can be one of the key success factors in your efforts. Factors to consider in tracking your efforts include the number of calls that were made, what times of day they were made, how many people actually answered the phone, how many people hung up before the marketer could finish the script and how many people heard the entire script. In addition to these basic items, also track the number of successful calls versus the number of rejections and which marketers were successful and which were not. Telemarketing software is available for this type of statistical evaluation. Looking at your efforts over the long-term (three weeks or more) will provide a more telling picture than by simply looking at short-term results.
