Office workers' jobs may vary, but all must perform certain basic office functions.
While the range of jobs that are performed in an office is almost endless, most office workers will find that certain functions are almost universal across all office jobs. If you’re preparing for work in an office, make sure you understand the basic office functions you will need to perform.
Interacting with Colleagues
One of the advantages of working in an office is that you are in the same physical space as colleagues who are also there, and everyone is ultimately there to help the company achieve its business goals. Being in the same space as others tasked with helping the company meet its goals ensures that people communicate with one another to find the best ways to perform certain tasks and brainstorm ideas that will move the company forward. You will likely need to collaborate with others on projects and tasks, and you will have to interact with your boss or supervisor on a regular basis.
Operating Office Equipment
If you work in an office, you likely have a computer and phone to help you accomplish your job. You must know use these properly. An improper use of a computer may be browsing social networking sites or sites with explicit sexual content. Improper use of a work telephone may include making personal long distance phone calls. You will also likely need to know operate a fax machine and a photo copier.
Generating/Consuming Written Communication
While being in an office allows you to communicate easily with coworkers and superiors on a face-to-face basis, you will also need to generate and consume lots of written word. This may include reports, updates on on-going projects and tasks, and company memos. Experience in common word processing programs, like Microsoft Word, is expected of most office workers. Other programs, such as Microsoft Outlook and Excel, that facilitate the sharing of written information, should also be mastered.
