Develop An Identity

Developing an identity for your business starts with an idea.

Just as people start developing their own unique identity from birth, businesses must also develop an identity which makes them stand out and be able to successfully reach their target consumers. When a new company is started, it will have an intended purpose, market and philosophy for business. Creating an identity for the company allows it to communicate these things coherently and consistently to its consumers and industry partners through logos, graphics, catchphrases and stationary. As with human friendships and relationships, a recognizable and positive identity makes a company memorable, desirable and appealing within its chosen environment, which in turn means people will respond positively to it.

Instructions

1. Research your competitors' brand identities and what makes them unique. Write down what you like and don't like about each and then think about how you could can create a different identity that your consumers or clients can relate to.

2. Organize a focus group with a selection of your target consumers. Ask them what they look for in a brand identity and note down their ideas and suggestions.

3. Brainstorm ideas about what visual identity you want your brand to have. For example, what your company name should be, what the logo will look like, what your motto will say, what color scheme you will use and if you will have a person or graphic object to be the face of your company.

4. Decide which ideas are best and then create your company title, logo, color scheme, motto and other graphic items to represent your company. Request feedback from stakeholders and employers. Organize another focus group with the same participants to see if they agree with your identity vision. A graphic design company can help you develop the final product if you do not have expertise in this area.

5. Implement your company's identity into everything you do, including products, marketing campaigns, stationery, fundraisers and website. The more coverage, exposure and repetition that your identity has among its target audience and within its industry, the more established and recognizable the identity will be.
