Career Options In Fashion Magazines

Fashion magazines offer multiple career choices.

Fashion is a large and fast-growing industry with a variety of career options. Fashion magazines in particular play a large role in trend setting, and a job with a fashion magazine guarantees exposure of your work to thousands of consumers. There are several career paths available to people who want to work at a fashion magazine, among these choices are writing, editing, styling and photography.

Writer

The most obvious position at a fashion magazine is that of a writer, either on staff or freelance. Writers cover topics ranging from current or upcoming trends or news in the fashion world to popular designers. Staff writers are usually assigned article topics by their editors, and freelance writers send inquiries to magazines before pitching them stories.

Editor

A magazine can have one or more editors, depending on the size of the magazine. The editor in chief determines the content of the magazine and is usually the driving force behind the magazine. Different editors usually preside over different areas of content, for example, beauty, up and coming designers, trends and accessories. The editor's job is to make sure all of the writers get their work done on time and that the writing is of a suitable quality.

Photographer

Like writers, photographers might be on staff or freelance for specific photo shoots. Some magazines and photographers have long-term working relationships, like Steven Meisel and Vogue Italia--Mr. Meisel has shot every cover of Vogue Italia since 1988. The amount of creative control the photographer has over the content and direction of photo shoots usually depends on the prestige of the photographer.

Stylist

The stylist is the person who picks out the clothing and accessories used in editorials (photo shoots) for the magazine. They might also decide the background or background items in a photo shoot. Depending on the size of the magazine and the photo shoot, there can be one stylist or several.

A "subset" of styling is hair and makeup. The hair stylist or makeup artist will work on the models on the sets of photo shoots to make sure everything matches the head stylist's vision.
