Skills Needed For A Marketing Manager

The field of marketing involves helping match up customers with products and services that they need or want. At the top of this field are marketing managers, who play a vital role in the marketing process. If you are considering trying to become a marketing manager, you'll need a set of special skills to make it work.

Ability to Analyze Data

A marketing manager must analyze a large amount of data and make recommendations. Marketing managers have to review the results from marketing campaigns they are in charge of. If the marketing campaign is not getting results, the marketing manager has to be able to identify the problem and make recommendations to fix it. This sometimes requires great attention to detail.

Communicate Ideas

Another essential skill for marketing managers is the ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively. In the field of marketing, you have to think creatively and be able to convey these ideas to others. For example, when you are trying to sell a marketing campaign to a company, you have to be able to transfer the idea behind the campaign over to the decision makers in the company. While visual aids can help with this, you must be able to sell them on the idea.

Computer Skills

Marketing managers have to be comfortable with computers and have a wide array of computer skills. Much of the marketing process is completed with the help of a computer. You may need to design an advertising campaign or contribute individual elements to one. You may need to be able to use a computer so that you can give a presentation to a client or to your employees. Most communication with clients will also take place online.

Work as Liaison

When you are a marketing manager, you must essentially be a liaison between multiple departments. You may have to work closely with product managers and other managers so that you can effectively market your company's products. You must be able to take information from one department and transfer that knowledge to your marketing campaigns. You must work well with other departments so that the company can more effectively accomplish its marketing goals over the long term.
