About Press
Releases
If an organization has big news to share, how does it get the attention of the masses? How can entertainers or non-profit group bring awareness to themselves without having to spend a lot of money? They distribute a press release.
Function
To promote a spectacular event or great new product, businesses or individuals will create a press release. A press release is a one-page document revealing the pertinent details of their big news. It gives reporters information on contact them should they wish to feature the product or event; it tells when and where an event will take place; and it states how this new product will revolutionize the marketplace.
Types
A press release may be distributed on its own or as part of a press kit. On its own, the writer will want to include the who, what, when, where and how of the item being promoted. Quotes from experts or consumers are often included in the body of the press release to generate more interest. When assembling a press kit, the organization will include photos, video and other materials to promote the product or event.
Benefits
The media needs story ideas. Reporters and producers use the press release as a foundation to build a longer story. If they see a concert or street fair or athletic event is happening in their neighborhood, they might be interested in promoting it. The vital details they would need to write or shoot a piece are all there in the press release. They can also gain information on business transactions that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Time Frame
Press releases can be used far in advance of a large event or can be used for breaking news.
Potential
Press releases can be faxed directly to media outlets or mailed as part of a press kit. Many websites feature a "Press Room" link. This allows the organization to post clips from magazines and newspapers, stream video, promote a podcast, provide downloads and more. Electronic press kits can deliver more information, and it saves money.
Considerations
Press releases can also be used to issue corrections on past misstatements.
