Write A Persuasive Essay For The 8th Grade

Write a Persuasive Essay for the 8th Grade

Writing a persuasive essay means convincing someone to hold a point of view, to buy a product or to do something. A well thought-out topic, good content, structure, grammar and spelling are all things that lead to a good grade. Following a set of steps can help writers accomplish this process.

Instructions

1. Pick a topic that is both interesting and controversial. A controversial topic is good for persuasive writing because many people most likely have an opinion and will want to read a different point of view. Know your audience and don't pick a topic no one knows anything about. Stay away from anything that might get you into trouble. Write about what you know and avoid topics that will take a lot of research and make the writing process difficult.

2. Develop the idea with an outline so the argument is well-constructed. Work through the entire argument in this form to help flush out ideas and write down support each point. Writing from an outline helps you to see the idea on paper. Write the entire outline and make clear points.

3. Support the argument by gathering research from newspapers, magazines, books and Internet sources. Use in-text citations in the paper so the reader does not need to look for a source of information. Government sources work well because they are highly credible. Even the most brilliant television hosts and politicians support their arguments with facts and figures.

4. Begin writing with a solid introduction that states the major thesis (or topic) of the argument. Use separate paragraphs to develop each idea and use transitions between different ideas to move from point to point. Write and revise as many drafts as needed until the topic is developed and the essay is cohesive and makes sense.

5. Incorporate good storytelling into the essay. Think of how the topic relates to a personal experience and think how that story might make a more compelling argument. If writing a persuasive essay about making smoking illegal in public places, write about a personal experience with asthma. A good persuasive newspaper editorial or letter to the editor often appeals to emotion to help the writer make a point.
