Promote Art & Culture In The Community

Be creative if you want to promote arts and culture in your community.

Arts and cultural programs, activities and events are lacking in many communities. Budget cuts in schools and local governments often target arts education and cultural events first. With this absence of activities, you may be having a hard time finding arts and cultural events to attend in your community. Some people feel that arts and cultural education isn't as important to have in schools as science and math classes. If you want to revive arts and culture in your community, try advertising your cause, hosting an event or fundraising to support your goals.

Instructions

1. Spread your message of wanting to promote arts and culture in your community. Advertise by hanging posters around town. Make a profile on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter that keep people updated on local arts and cultural news and events. Another easy way to promote arts and culture in your community is to start with local kids. Start an art or music program at a local elementary school or volunteer to be an art docent in a classroom. Teaching children the value of art and culture will help promote lifelong appreciations across generations and will infuse your community with a fresh group of people interested in the arts.

2. Host activities such as mural paintings and cultural festivals. See if a local school or museum can donate a wall on a building for a community mural and invite everyone you know to come paint it. You could even hold a contest to select the winning design. A school or community center may provide a venue for a cultural exhibition. Invite people to show off their best recipes from their native cultures. Ask children and their families at schools to perform cultural dances and play music in a talent show. You can make this an annual event in observance of the Council for Art Education's Youth Art Month in March.

3. Promoting arts and culture in your community can be expensive, especially if you decide to host events. Fundraise to promote local cultural festivals and public art. You can simply ask for donations or can ask people to participate in a raffle or auction to raise money. Be sure to advertise your fundraiser and ask for volunteers to help. The more people who hear about your message, the more they will want to help and become involved.
