Singing with a musical theater group is a popular dream for many. But with so few opportunities and so many hopefuls, you have to position and prepare yourself to stand out from the crowd and secure your dream job. Following these steps can help you to achieve goal that many hope for but only a few attain.

1. Locate musical theater groups in your area or in areas you'd like to perform by researching advertisements in newspapers, alternative weeklies, online and any publications that specialize in the performing arts, such as Backstagejobs.com or The Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia, and see who is hiring.


2. Research the groups you'd like to audition for. You want to know their history, what type of performances they've done in the past and what type of singers they usually hire.


3. Pay close attention to what's needed in the audition process for each group.


4. Prepare your audition material based on the information provided in the advert placed by the group. Practice the song(s) you plan on using in your audition.


5. Make any necessary arrangements for your audition such as acquiring accompaniment if not provided at the audition. Don't wait until the last minute to do this, make these arrangements as early as possible.


6. Audition. Give your best performance and hope that you get the job.
