Make Your Own Advertising Posters

Make Your Own Advertising Posters

Posters are an effective way to promote and advertise everything from movies to special events. A well-designed poster will attract attention to your products, services or events and bring you the customer response you need to be a success. Here are some guidelines you can use to help you make an advertising poster for your own special event or product that will attract consumer interest and bring you customers.

Instructions

1. Think about layout. What size will your poster be? The standard poster size is 27 x41 inches. This should be sufficient to fit your needs, however, due to the cost of printing posters of this size, you may want to go smaller and consolidate your layout.

2. Focus your message. You have an expansive area to work with when you're designing a poster. The tendency may be to run wild and lose the focus of what you want to say. Center the subject of your poster and make the descriptive title or text large. Work related information around the centered subject. If, for instance, you are advertising for summer camp, the name of the camp would be centered and made visually appealing. You would include camp activities, camp dates, costs and sign-up information around the name of the summer camp.

3. Use graphics to make your poster topic appealing. If you're advertising for a restaurant, pictures of some of the dishes on the menu will not only whet appetites, they will quickly get across the key information you want to convey. Beautiful graphics will also hold consumer attention longer.

4. Decide whether you want to create your poster by hand or using computer software. Since this is an advertising poster, you will most likely want to use a computer to achieve a professional look. Only attempt to do your poster by hand if you are artistically inclined. Computer software like Adobe Illustrator, InDesign or Photoshop will give you the complete set of design tools you need to create eye-catching text and graphics.

5. You might choose to hand-create your poster if all you need is a single poster. If you choose to display the hand-designed poster, be sure to spray it with a clear fixative that will keep it from being smudged. You can buy the fixative at any hobby shop. Another alternative would be to take it to a printer and have it laminated. A professional printer can cover your entire poster with a thin layer of plastic laminate that will protect your work. A printer will also have the printing equipment to reproduce your poster digitally for you. Posters done by hand can be unique advertising tools, but mass producing is better done on a computer.

6. Avoid using a border on your advertising poster. Borders take up too much valuable space and look out of place on something as large as a poster. It will better serve your needs by choosing appropriate graphics to get your message across.

7. Save your poster on a disc and take the file to a professional printer. Adobe PDF is the best file format to use as any printer will have the capability to work with this file. Look in the phone book for a local printer or find one online that specializes in poster printing and will offer a discount on quantity. Ask about a special protective coating and heavier stock poster board to give your advertising poster a longer lifespan.
