African American Religious Gifts

There are gifts for African Americans of all faiths.

African Americans participate in all faiths, from Christianity to Islam to Judaism, and express their beliefs in a multitude of ways. To celebrate holidays like Christmas, Ramadan or Hanukkah, or just to show caring, there are many religious-themed gifts that honor the beliefs of African Americans no matter where or how they worship.

Gospel Music

Gospel music is a wonderful gift for African-American Christians.

African-American Christians have a long and storied history of performing and worshiping with gospel music, praising the Lord through boisterous, passionate song. Many albums of gospel music are available for sale, ranging from recordings of revered choirs to works by noted solo artists like Cissy Houston. There are also books about the history of gospel, like "People Get Ready: A New History of Black Gospel Music," which makes for a unique and spiritually centered gift for music enthusiasts.

Themed Bibles

An African-American-centered Bible is wonderful for worship and reflection.

For worship and study, there are special African-American-themed Bibles that bring a unique perspective to prayer. For kids, the "My Holy Bible for African-American Children" features illustrations by black artists, traditional spirituals and "features that speak directly to their life experiences and heritage," according to the book's back cover. African-American women will appreciate a copy of "Aspire: The New Women of Color Study Bible," with inspirational quotes and specially written prayers. Both books provide a unique African-American insight into Christianity to connect with and inspire readers.

Islamic Films

African-American Muslims may enjoy watching films about their faith.

African-American Muslims will enjoy films about their faith, its leaders and its history. The movie "Malcolm X," directed by noted African-American filmmaker Spike Lee, depicts the life and times of the controversial but important black Muslim leader, and was nominated for two Oscars. There are also many excellent documentary films about Islam that African-American Muslims will appreciate, such as "Inside Mecca," produced by National Geographic. The film explores the holiest site of Islam, and the traditional pilgrimage known as the Haj, by following several travelers making the journey. PBS created "Islam: Empire of Faith," which explores various facets of the religion, such as history, culture and noted Muslims. Such films are wonderful educational tools that will inspire reflection and reverence, making them a valued gift.

Books on Judaism

African-American Jews may appreciate books about their faith and history.

Black Jews are a small group, but have a proud history going back hundreds of years and spanning many countries and continents, from Africa to America. Rebecca Walker, daughter of Alice Walker, author of "The Color Purple," wrote the book "Black, White and Jewish" about the challenges she faced growing up with several identities, giving other black Jews a sense of community and support as they try to balance their faith and ancestry. To learn more about the history of African-American Jews, "We, the Black Jews" by Yosef ben-Jochannan explores the origins and diaspora of Black Jews, from ancient to contemporary times, and is an excellent way for African-American Jews to study their origins.
