Field trips for fourth-graders can help students remember the information that you taught them in class by giving hands-on experience. It also helps students to understand that learning doesn't only happen inside the classroom. Look for local areas that offer programs that coincide with your lesson plans.
Library
According to Scholastic, research is an important skill for students to learn in fourth grade, including compiling research. Assign students a short research paper that requires research---students can pick the topic of their choice. Then, visit the city library to find books related to the topic. Students can learn to find materials through the library's database, navigate the library, get a library card and take out books.
Local Historical Places
Fourth grade students should be learning state history and can benefit from places that teach about local history. Many areas across the United States have historical places where volunteers re-enact the history. Students may learn how pioneers cooked foods, see different types of homes throughout the years and even try their hand at skills like churning butter.
Art Museum
If you have a fine art component to your fourth grade curriculum, a visit to the art museum can show students what you're really talking about. Art museums can be huge, so choose a small area to focus on. For example, you could visit the Egyptian art section to tie in art with ancient history.
Grocery Store
Fourth-graders should be learning the basics of good nutrition and treat their bodies right. While most students will have already been to a grocery store before, an official tour can help them open their eyes to new things. For example, a produce expert can show them pick a ripe melon at the store, and students can learn compare food labels to find the healthier choice.
Farm
A visit to a farm can help students learn about where their food comes from and how farmers make food. Depending on the season, students may be able to pick apples or plant their own flowers to take home. You can tie this in with science---as fourth-graders are studying life cycles of plants---or you could tie this in with health and eating nutritious foods.
