Become a Special Event Manager

Special events managers help coordinate a variety of events for non-profit agencies, private individuals, large companies and trade groups. These managers work to find and reserve the appropriate space, find catering and set up whatever equipment is required. In order to become a special event manager, you'll need experience in the industry and a college degree. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Become a Special Event Manager

1. Study for a bachelor's degree in a management-related field. You can choose from several different kinds of degrees, opting for a business-management degree or a concentration in hotel and tourism management. Regardless of your educational focus, you may still have to work your way up to a management position.

2. Work as an event staff member for sporting and special events at your college. Most schools hire students to work as ushers during these types of events. A job like this one offers important, entry-level experience to help build your resume.

3. Help plan and promote local music shows at your school. Often, colleges will have event areas for student use. Helping promote local bands might not be financially rewarding, but the experience you gain can be invaluable.

4. Try to intern with a special events planning group. You can also try to intern with a specific kind of event group, like one that handles concerts or business conferences. Don't get discouraged if your internship isn't very challenging because you can still make important contacts in the industry.

5. Look for entry-level event planning jobs. In this industry, you'll have to start out at the bottom and work your way up to being a special event manager. The experience you gained in college should help you get hired directly to the planning staff of a local group.

6. Volunteer to help out at local events. If you're affiliated with a religious organization or community group, be sure to let it know that you're interested in being a special event manager. You may be hired to work part time and help plan events.
