Advertising managers
are paid to develop creative campaigns for companies.
Advertising managers plan and coordinate the activities of advertising departments. They also produce advertising campaigns for entire companies or for single accounts, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bureau indicates that over 32,000 advertising and promotions managers worked in the United States in 2010. Starting salaries for advertising managers are typically about or less than one-fourth of the salaries earned by those at the top of the profession.
Average Salary
Advertising and promotions managers nationwide made an average salary of $98,720 per year in 2010, according to the bureau. However, this figures reflects the salaries made by those with all levels of experience and not just those starting out in the industry. The National Association of Colleges and Employers indicates that the average salary of marketing majors coming out of college was $41,948, as of February 2011. This corresponds closely to the bottom end of the pay scale noted by the BLS. The bureau indicates that the lowest 10 percent of advertising and promotions managers made less than $41,480 per year in 2010.
Earning Potential
Beyond the starting salaries noted by the BLS and the National Association of Colleges and Employers, salaries for marketing managers can skyrocket to much higher figures. The BLS indicates that marketing managers made a median salary of $83,890, with those in the middle half of the pay scale earning salaries somewhere between $56,820 and $122,570 per year. Those at the high end of the pay scale made annual salaries in excess of $166,400.
Industries
Earning potential is also partially determined by the industry. The BLS indicated that advertising and promotions managers in the electronics goods wholesale industry earned the highest average salaries in 2010, making an average of $140,710 per year. The largest group worked in the advertising and public relations industry, making an average salary of $121,560 per year. Those in the radio and television broadcasting field made $92,510, while those in the wholesale alcohol industry made $82,870.
Job Outlook
Those in the advertising and promotions management field can expect little to no job growth in the decade from 2008 to 2018, according to the BLS. The bureau indicated that advertising managers should experience little fallout from any economic downturn since they play such an integral role in the revenue generation strategies of companies.
