Medical Marketing Tips

Print mediums such as newspapers and journals can be effective medical marketing strategies.

Medical marketing essentially means finding ways to promote businesses that are in the healthcare and medical fields. This can be anything from doctor's offices, to hospitals, to pharmaceutical companies. Marketing a medical product or service is similar to marketing any other product or service in that you need to experiment and find the right mix of marketing strategies and tactics for your company.

Get a Website

Surprisingly, many people in the medical sector still do not have a website. Next time you visit your doctor or dentist, ask them if they have a website. You'll be surprised at how many don't, and it's a big mistake. According to eMarketer, in 2010, 221 million people in the U.S. will be online, about 71 percent of the total population. Millions of these people go online to search for medical information. Having a website is an absolute necessity to effectively market your business.

Promote Your Website

Promote your website with a combination of strategies. You can develop a SEM, or Search Engine Marketing campaign, where you pay for your medical company's ad to show up when certain words are typed into a search engine. Google AdWords is the most popular SEM service and has many tools to help novice users create a successful ad campaign. You can also promote your website by writing a blog or newsletter, which helps you develop a loyal customer base over time.

Word of Mouth

Word of mouth is one of the easiest free marketing tips. All you need to do is simply spread the word about a key benefit your medical company offers. The key to word of mouth is offering something of value to people that stands out in their minds. This will make people talk about your medical service and will help you market your business. For example, you can tell people that you are "the doctor to visit when they're being turned down by the insurance companies." Develop a unique positioning or benefit statement and spread the word.

Print Is Not Dead

With the onset of technology, many marketers have shunned the more traditional print marketing tactics. Print advertising is still a multibillion dollar business, and it's not going anywhere. Print advertising can help you effectively market a medical product or service. Choose from a variety of print tactics like brochures, sales letters, journal ads, newspaper and magazine ads and direct mail. Many pharmaceutical companies use journal and magazine ads to promote their products, while many physicians prefer to send targeted direct mail postcards to potential customers in their local area. When developing print materials, always communicate the key benefits of your product or service to the end user, rather than the features. Remember, it's not about what you do; it's about what you can do for your customers.
