The basic function of a marketing associate is to assist with the planning or execution of marketing activities; however, marketing associate is a very broad title. For example a marketing associate employed at a smaller company may work with and report directly to the marketing director. At many larger firms, marketing associate positions are entry-level jobs.
Education Requirements
Requirements vary depending upon the specific duties of the position. Entry-level positions that execute rather than plan marketing actives may only require a high school diploma or an equivalent.
A bachelor's degree is required for high-functioning positions. These jobs often serve as a training ground for future marketing managers and directors. Candidates with a degree in business administration and an emphasis in marketing are preferred. Individuals with degrees in journalism, communications, graphic design and a variety of other fields may be considered as well.
Other Requirements
Successful marketing associates must be comfortable working with computers and manipulating social networking sites. Individuals that pursue careers in marketing should work well under pressure as well. Marketing is a deadline and results driven career field. Candidates without these personality traits and skill-set may find marketing associate positions overly stressful. Candidates with marketing or sells experience are highly desirable.
Specialization
Marketing associates working at large companies may specialize in marketing communications, employee communications, Internet marketing, telemarketing, market research or a variety of other specialties. Associates employed by a small business or organization may handle marketing duties across all segments. Specialized positions often require special training or relevant job experience. Generalists must be creative, willing to learn and resourceful to meet various marketing goals.
Work Environment
Most marketing associates' work is done in an office environment. At the associate level time may also be spent in the field performing and monitoring marketing activities. For example, associates working in the event industry may be required to attend the functions their employer promotes. These events may take place inside busy night clubs, at outdoor sporting events or within supermarkets. A marketing associate for a small business may canvass neighborhoods placing flyers on cars or in mailboxes.
Earnings
Earnings for marketing associates vary greatly by industry, location and job duties. According to information provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and reported by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, starting salaries for marketing majors graduating in 2009 averaged $43,325. According to Simply Hired's online salary database, positions with the words "marketing associate" included in the job description paid $66,000 annually on average in 2010.
