Internet communication is a form of computer mediated communication (CMC). Computer mediated communication is any communication done through computers. Communication tools for Internet communication range from computer hardware and software to having good communication skills. (See Reference 2.)
Computer Hardware
A LAN (local area network) connection is needed for Internet communication. This hardware enables your computer to interact with other computers. The majority of computers come with a built in LAN connection. (See Reference 1.)
Computer Software
Computer software is what allows you to access Internet communication tools such as email, instant messaging and social networking websites. Without computer software and computer hardware you would be unable to communicate through the Internet. (See Reference 2.)
Email and Instant Messaging
Email is a popular Internet communication tool. Many educational institutions and businesses rely on email to communicate information to a large number of people. (See Reference 3.)
Instant messaging programs are downloadable programs that allow you to communicate with others who have the same instant messaging program. For privacy reasons each user creates a screen name which acts as the person's instant messaging identity.
Social Networking and Dating Websites
Dating websites are match making websites which use compatibility to determine the best matches for you. Social networking websites allow you to create your own network of people by becoming "friends" with other users. Both website types integrate many different communication tools. Perhaps the most important communication tool in relation to these websites is your profile. The information on your profile is an essential factor when another user is deciding whether or not to interact with you. (See Reference 2.)
Other Internet Communication
Other kinds of internet communication are blogs and voice over IP. Blogs are like public online diaries. Readers are able to share feedback by commenting on posts (blog entries). Some networking websites include a type of blogging called micro-blogging. Micro-blogging lets a person share what is on her mind in only a sentence or two. (See Reference 2.)
Voice over IP is like having a telephone conversation except instead of a phone line the conversation is supported by an internet connection. Businesses are among organizations which use voice over IP for communication.
Personal Communication Skills
At the core of computer mediated communication is the same communication skills needed when communicating with others in person or on the phone. If you do not possess good communication skills, you will struggle with communicating with others on the Internet. Good communication skills include knowing appropriate topics of conversation, listening to others and the ability to compromise in order to settle disagreements. (See Reference 2.)
