Taking the time to select just the right gift and finding time to purchase it can be a challenge on a busy schedule. Buying a gift card is easy and requires very little thought or time. Therefore, a gift card should be the perfect gift. Well, maybe not. There are advantages and disadvantages associated with gift cards. Though they may be the best choice in one situation, a more personal gift might be a better choice at other times.
Gift Cards are Impersonal
Gift cards have the disadvantage of being impersonal. They require no thought about the person receiving it and no consideration of what to buy. In a sense, they are generic; they can be anything. Gifts should be personal and geared specifically to the receiver. Purchasing a gift card is an easy way out. The recipient might think of it this way, too. A gift selected especially for that someone special may mean more to her than a gift card worth twice the cost.
Possible Loss or Expiration
Be aware of the expiration date on your gift card.
Gift cards might seem like a great idea at first glance, but consider the disadvantage that your recipient can easily forget about a gift card placed in a wallet. Some cards expire if not used by a specific date, often printed inconspicuously on the back. Additionally, if the person loses the gift card or someone steals it, the gift is truly lost.
Freedom of Choice
Gift cards do offer the advantage of freedom of choice. You give the receiver the opportunity to select exactly what she wants. It's not likely that she'll have to return that lovely cashmere sweater, purchased with her gift card, because she knows the exact color, size and style that suit her.
Readily Available
On the go, short on time -- purchase a gift card.
If you are pressed for time because you let your spouse's birthday sneak up on you, a gift card might be a lifesaver. The advantage is they're readily available. You can walk into most department stores and many specialty shops and purchase a gift card in a few short minutes. You can even buy a gift card on the way to the baby shower or birthday party. Some large retailers, grocery stores and drug stores also sell gift cards to other stores, such as restaurants and department stores.
