The fashion industry has many positions for those with business degrees.
The fast-paced world of fashion is always looking for new talent, but you don't only need to be handy with a needle and thread to be successful in the business. If you lack a background in fashion, you can still qualify for many positions in the fashion industry with a business degree.
Fashion merchandiser
Fashion merchandisers track trends based on statistics and try to assess what will be the "next big thing" so the store or company they work for will be able to meet demand. Some of the research that fashion merchandisers do includes looking over historical sale numbers, analyzing market trends, and tracking production costs, profits and losses to ensure that the correct merchandise is ready for the upcoming season. Because the position involves extensive analysis of numbers and trends a business degree is beneficial.
Fashion buyer
Fashion buyers typically work for a store or clothing company and work with fashion merchandisers, fashion designers, clothing suppliers and clothing manufacturers to oversee development of garments. A degree in business is handy in the position because a fashion buyer must assess budgets for products, potential profits made from sales, key regions where the product might sell better, as well as how much must be spent in order to see specific gains.
Fashion PR
Public relations (PR) in fashion utilizes key aspects of a business degree. Fashion PR is about building a brand and ensuring that brand is sold successfully to the right demographic. Those in Fashion PR hold press conferences for the media and the fashion label, write press releases to market products and act as a liaison between their employer and the press when a new product might be launching or when a crisis might occur.
Retail merchandiser
Retail merchandisers are similar to fashion merchandisers, except retail merchandisers work on a more micro level with individual stores and chains to ensure that products are priced correctly. Retail merchandisers also crunch past sales and try to predict whether a certain garment or accessory will sell during a specific season in a specific store. Other duties include deciding how certain fashions are better sold on the retail floor, for example on a rack or a display stand, and how many items should be kept in stock.
