Email marketing campaigns are a fast, efficient and affordable way to stay in contact with past clients, garner new sales and promote your business. Starting an effective email marketing campaign is easy with a few tested strategies that can open up a whole new base of clientele.

1. Check and double check your lead sources. This is particularly important if you're using an email marketing directory. Choose opt-in leads and check your sources via references. People that did not opt-in can get irate. You want the people contacting you for a service or sale, not out of anger.


2. Use a template, Be sure to personalize and tweak the ad for your audience. Templates come in a wide range of styles, from professional to artsy and many free or affordable email marketing templates can be found online. 3. Be honest with the title. Make sure the body of the marketing email is actually related to the subject in the title. If the first couple of sentences are not related to the subject line, you will lose your audience. Avoid dollar signs and exclamations in your email's subject box.


4. Offer it up. Offer to solve your potential client's problem, make something easier or just more fun. Whatever you're marketing, put it in terms that show what you can do for them. Highlighting how you have helped past clients is an effective way to show what you can do.


5. Keep it professional. No prose, be succinct. No loud flashy eyesores. No exclamation points throughout the ad. If you want to emphasize something, just use bold type. If you want people to read the entire ad, keep it clean. That means checking and double checking spelling, grammar and flow. If in doubt about the flow of the ad, read it aloud. Not once, but several times.


6. Put your contact info in two places within the email. Bombard the text with 'click here' or repetitive plugs doesn't usually do much but look like a hard sell. But, two well placed and clickable contact links near the top and bottom of the email makes for easy and effective responses.


7. Be respectful. Always include and opt out message at the bottom of the page. Include clear instructions and a link for opting out of future mailings. Not only will this save you the headache of dealing with people that really want off your list, it builds trust in clients that are actually reading your emails.


8. Offer a bonus. It may be a special offer for individuals who respond to that particular ad. It can be a freebie, coupon or trial membership. The incentive possibilities are pretty limitless. If you have a newsletter, that can make a great give-away bonus as well.
