The Different Careers In The Advertising Field

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, career opportunities in the field of advertising are expected to see an increase of 13 percent by 2018. The advertising field has a variety of opportunities including working for a newspaper, an ad agency or in marketing. While competition for advertising jobs may be stiff, a career in the field can have individuals working on something new and different each day.

Sales Representatives

The sales staff plays a key role in any advertising company. Sales representatives are responsible for landing new clients along with maintaining and growing current accounts. The company will assign a sales territory to each individual sales rep, along with a sales goal for each month, quarter or year. Depending on the company, reps can work in a specific region or throughout the country dealing with large and small clients. Reps will put together promotions and ideas with the goal of securing the client's business. Exact qualifications will vary, but most employers will prefer an undergraduate or graduate degree with an emphasis on marketing. Previous sales experience is also preferred, but training programs are available. Reps should be creative with the ability to think outside the box for new and fresh ideas.

Creative Team

The creative team in an advertising company is responsible for creating marketing pieces and advertisements for the company's clients. This team will consist of graphic designers and copy writers, each of importance to the company. The creative team will work with sales reps to create spec ads to increase the likelihood of a sale and will be responsible for designing and implementing the client's ideas and plans. Graphic designers will be responsible for the actual look and layout of the piece, while the copy writers work on the message and text of the promotion. An undergraduate degree in design with a marketing or advertising emphasis is preferred, although exact qualifications will vary depending on the employer. Previous design work is also a plus.

Advertising Manager

The advertising manager is responsible for directing the group's advertising and promotional campaigns. The manager will work with both the sales staff and creative team to oversee the client's campaign from start to finish. In addition, the manager will work with financial departments to determine a budget for the client and what costs will be involved with implementing the campaign. An advertising manager may also work directly with clients who are looking for a large and high-dollar campaign. A career in advertising management requires an undergraduate degree in a field such as marketing, advertising or journalism. Knowledge of consumer behavior and market research studies is beneficial and previous advertising experience is highly preferred.
