What Equipment Do You Need To Run A Restaurant

The equipment needed in a restaurant depends heavily on the desired atmosphere.

Equipping a restaurant is expensive, time consuming, and difficult. But by planning and correctly assessing the needs of the establishment, the process can be greatly simplified. The equipment needed will vary greatly depending on the type of establishment.

Although all restaurants need some basic staples, specialized establishments such as pizzerias, Asian restaurants and barbecue restaurants may require special equipment which can be very expensive.

Before selecting larger expensive appliances, make sure to check all local laws and codes to ensure that the equipment is permitted in your area. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Appliances

Select an oven that is appropriate for your restaurant's needs.

At the very least any restaurant will need a stove, a refrigerator, a freezer, an oven, an industrial microwave, a sink, a dishwasher and plenty of counter space for food preparation.

Other essentials include a food processor, high-grade mixer, meat slicer, industrial blender and an overhead water hose for cleaning dishes.

You may want to keep food warm until it is taken out to patrons; you will need a heat lamp for this. Additionally, if you plan to serve desserts, you may wish to purchase a refrigerated display case to tempt diners with your confections.

Cookware

Stainless steel is easier to clean, but cast iron pans last forever.

Your cookware does not have to be pretty, but it must be functional. Several items needed to run an effective restaurant include: stock pots, sauce pots, large frying pans, smaller sauteing pans, flat griddle style pans (if your stove does not have a separate grill), casserole dishes, pie and cake tins, mixing bowls, large salad bowls, flat baking sheets, large serving dishes and most common kitchen utensils and tools.

Some chefs prefer to use cast iron cookware due to its efficient heat distribution and durability. Any type of cookware (stainless steel, copper, non-stick, etc.) is suitable as long as it can withstand the demands of your restaurant.

Dining Ware

Don't forget the takeout boxes.

A restaurant must present food in a manner that is appealing to its patrons. The presentation of the meal will greatly affect the customer's dining experience. At a bare minimum, most restaurants require: plates, silverware, a variety of different glassware, napkins, bowls, tablecloths, place settings and centerpieces.

Keep in mind that well coordinated dining ware will give your restaurant a more professional feel.

Furniture

A well planned decor lets customers know you are professional.

For starters you will need tables, chairs, a counter if you plan to have a receptionist, couches or alternative seating in the waiting area, a bar and bar accessories if you plan to serve liquor, outdoor seating, ashtrays, kitchen cabinets, pot racks, shelves and possibly a chopping block.

Many restaurants choose extra frills such as fish tanks, rustic wall decorations, fountains and activity areas for young children.

Extras

Depending on the type of restaurant you are opening, there are several extras you may want to investigate. For example, most restaurants will want to consider purchasing a deep fryer, a charcoal or gas grill or a rotisserie oven.

Barbecue restaurants may want to consider electric and wood smokers, curing or aging rooms, high capacity charcoal grills or portable high capacity propane grills.

Pizzerias will need special pizza ovens designed for higher temperatures and high capacity. Don't forget the large heated display to showcase your product.

Asian restaurants tend to use special ultra-high heat stoves. Other fixtures will depend on the style and size of your restaurant. Remember, there are no rigid rules, just make sure your business is well equipped to handle customer needs.
