Have you created an amazing recipe on your own that you think everyone would love? Do you have a secret old family recipe that you want to share with the world? Whatever the case is, there are a few steps you need to follow in order to sell your recipe. Here's how you can get started.
Instructions
1. Research the food industry. Keep in mind that the library and Internet are your best friends. Read books by other food entrepreneurs to learn about their successes and failures. "From Kitchen to Market" is a recommended book. There are also various websites and message boards on the Internet that are great resources for learning about this topic.
2. Consult an attorney to discuss legal protection of your recipe and perhaps a licensing plan with a company or negotiating with a private label packer (these things are assuming that you merely want to sell your recipe and not manufacture, distribute and sell the product yourself).
3. After you speak with an attorney and if you feel positive about going forward and selling your recipe to a company, start the process of looking for a packing company in your area. Ask around with friends and coworkers, use the Internet, look in the library--there are tons of ways to discover local companies.
4. When you find a packing company that interests you, send them a letter or give them a telephone call with your recipe idea and your proposal. If they like you and you like them, you might have just sold your recipe. Good luck, and who knows, maybe we'll be seeing your name on food products in grocery stores everywhere someday.
