Get A Restaurant Job Promotion

Restaurant work requires long hours and dedication to the job.

Working in a restaurant can be a very stressful and surprisingly competitive environment. When a position opens up, such as a management role or lead position in the kitchen, many restaurant workers might feel like they deserve to get it based on seniority or other reasons. However, even if you are not the most senior member of the support staff, you can still get a restaurant promotion and start building your job into a satisfying career.

Instructions

1. Update your resume. When you might be up for a promotion at the restaurant you work at now, you will probably have to go through a formal application process. This includes submitting a resume. Add details about the responsibilities you have at the restaurant and what you've learned, as well as any training you have received while working there.

2. Get certified if it makes sense for the promotion you want. The American Culinary Federation, for example, offers some certifications programs, such as for different levels of chefs and cooks and pastry professionals.

3. Accept more challenging roles. Special projects, such as updating the menu, or temporary roles, like supervising fellow employees while your manager is at a meeting, should be welcome. When management sees that you are willing to accept more responsibilities, your chances for a promotion increase and you will have more to add to your resume.

4. Put in your time. Restaurant promotions don't operate solely on seniority, but the longer you're there, the more you will know about the business and the better your chances will be for getting a promotion. If you don't get the promotion this time, continue to work hard and you'll have a better chance next time.

5. Look for a restaurant promotion outside your current place of employment. If you feel you've been overlooked or you're unhappy where you are, it might be time to look somewhere else. It's usually best to keep your job search secret from your current employer to avoid being replaced before you have a new job.
