Artists can do many things, including design ad campaigns and product labels.
The art world includes a number of different careers, from illustrating movies and books to managing advertising concepts. Few fine artists are able to live exclusively from their artistic creations. But many find financially rewarding careers contributing their creativity to industries such as publishing, advertising, film production and art curating and sales.
Fine Artists
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010-2011, fine artists in salaried positions in 2008 earned an average of $42,650 a year. These include painters, sculptors and illustrators. Illustrators might work producing illustrations for books, scientific journals and greeting card companies or designing art for textiles, stationary or wallpaper. Most fine artists, however, work for themselves and sell their work in galleries and to museums. Most fine artists, according to the BLS, are unable to support themselves solely through their art.
Multimedia Artists
Multimedia artists work in movies, advertisements and the Internet. They might draw storyboards for movies, create animated characters or work in computer-designed graphics for movies. The average annual income in 2008 for multimedia artists was $56,330.
Art Directors
Art directors are in charge of overall design and style for magazines, newspapers and advertising campaigns. They make sure that the illustrators, photographers and other artists produce work in keeping with the concept that the art director is trying to promote. Art directors were paid an average annual salary of $76,980 in 2008.
Archivists and Curators
Archivists and curators have similar jobs. Archivists maintain information such as documents and photographs about art. Curators might be museum directors. It is their job to protect and maintain the art itself. Between the two, the average annual salary for archivists and curators in 2008 was about $46,000.
