To attract attention for your small business, do something newsworthy.


Public relations is the process of creating a public image for a company or an organization. As a small business owner you face special PR challenges, because you must first get your business in the public eye, and then take steps to ensure that the image you project is a positive one.


Create News


Creating news is a cost-effective way to generate PR for your small business. Do something newsworthy in order to attract attention, such as offering a free product or service for the unemployed, or inviting a celebrity to meet customers at your store. Send out press releases to media outlets such as newspapers and radio stations, informing them of your news. Include contact information such as name, telephone number and email, as well as a well-written paragraph telling them about your event or promotion. Make sure your introductory sentence is interesting and informative in order to encourage recipients to read further. Be specific about times and places.


Internet Marketing


Use the internet to generate PR for your business. Create an attractive and informative website telling customers who you are, what you offer and why they should patronize your business. Include a page with links to compatible businesses and organizations, and encourage them to link to your site as well. Use social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook to spread information about your business, and also to inform customers about upcoming promotions and events. Update each of these venues regularly, to keep yourself in the public eye and give customers a reason to return.


Community Events


Get involved with your community. Support local businesses and tell them about your company. Sponsor community events such as food drives and block parties. Donate items to auctions at local schools and community centers. This gives you an opportunity to draw attention to your name, and also gives you a chance to showcase your products.


Networking


Build a network of local contacts and professionals who can help spread the word about your small business. Join organizations such as your local chamber of commerce, and professional organizations geared towards small business networking. Take advantage of opportunities, such as tabling, at networking events and forums which allow entrepreneurs to introduce their companies. Look for opportunities to collaborate with other local businesspeople on promotional projects and events, such as product giveaways.
